How to Choose Color - for Color Phobes!

Yes, it can be scary to choose colors.  Yes, with all the choices, it might feel overwhelming.  Yes, it can be a costly mistake.  But what fun is playing it safe?  A home with no color looks unfinished and can leave you feeling empty and even a little depressed.  So here are some quick, inexpensive ways to add color to your home - without making a big commitment.

  • Candles - The local department stores and one of my favorites - Pier1 Imports - is always overflowing with candles in a variety of colors and styles.  Grab a bunch, and place them in clusters of three around the room.

  • Paintings - If you are afraid to make a strong paint statement on your walls, why not hang a colorful painting.  It does not have to be expensive.  Just select the subject matter and colors you like and this will instantly brighten your space without commitment.

  • Blankets and Throws - A soft colorful throw laid on your sofa, a chair or your bed not only makes a big impact, but it's great to curl up with on chilly evenings.

  • Lampshades - Lampshades come in all shapes and colors.  Change up your white or beige lampshade for black to add drama to your room.  Or use green, or maroon, or a multicolored strip, or a colorful patterned lampshade to bring color into your room.  When the light is turned on, your shade can add a cozy glow.

  • Pillows - If you are afraid to make a color choice, buy large colorful pillows and toss them on the sofa, a chair or on your bed  This is a great way to ease into adding color to your room.  To change the look of these pillows down the road or try a new color, buy ready made pillow covers (www.ballarddesigns.com), or make your own.

And don't forget about:

  • Trim - Want a quick way to add impact to your room?  Glue or sew trim onto pillows, window treatments, even your furniture.  Trim comes in every color, shape and material.  Find trim that harmonizes with the mood of your room.  Use solid colors or multi-colors to introduce a new or bold color in your room.

  • Flowers - Fresh flowers add more than color to your home; they also add happiness.  For even more cheer, display your flowers in colorful vases.

  • Rugs - If you are keeping your entire room neutral, a darker rug will anchor the space and make it feel more comfortable.  After you bring in a rug you love, make sure the other accessories you choose coordinate with it!

So, come on Color Phobes, try adding a little color and excitement to your decor - without doing anything drastic or permanent.  It's a great way to tryout the latest color trends or just to change up your look.  Have fun!
